What is the eligibility criteria for UGC NET Economics?
UGC NET Economics is conducted every year at National Level. University Grants Commission (UGC) organizes the National Eligibility Test (NET) every year to evaluate and determine a candidate's eligibility for Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) positions in Indian universities and colleges.

When it comes to the eligibility requirements for JRF and Assistant Professor for UGC NET Economics 2022 are different and Candidates need to indicate whether they wish to apply for simply "Assistant Professor" or both "Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor" when they fill out the online application form. From 2018 onwards, the UGC- NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Eligibility Criteria for UGC NET Economics
Education
Candidates should have done their Master's Degree from a recognized university or college or institute in a specific, particular stream, like Economics for UGC NET Economics Exam. Further, candidates must have scored at least 55 percent in their Master's (Post Graduation). However, 5% exemption is given to the Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Persons with Disabilities (PWD), and Transgender Category candidates. Therefore, they must have scored at least 50 percent in their Master's.
Important Notes
#1 Some students have to wait for their results and they are appearing for their final exams, in that case - Candidates are still eligible to apply for the UGC NET Economics Exam. But, these candidates will have to secure a minimum percentage set up by the NTA (National Testing Agency) to get admitted and considered.
#2 Further, the above mentioned candidates need to finish their post-graduation within 2 years from the date of result and cutoff of the UGC NET exam released with the required percentage, or else, they will be treated as disqualified.
#3 All the Candidates are always advised to choose the same domain (Subject) for Paper 2 as their postgraduate domain (Subject). In case, your required post-graduate subject isn't mentioned in the 81 NET subjects, you can then take a similar subject instead.
Age
Junior Research Fellow
As per the notification, the maximum age for UGC NET Economics - Junior Research Fellow (JRF) is 30 years. The age criteria for the UGC NET Economics exam is given below as per the posts applicable :-
Candidate must be under the age of 31 as on the first day of the month in which the test is completed. Further, candidates having research experience can be granted an age reduction equal to the number of years/periods spent doing research in the relevant field or completing a Post-Graduation degree. Researchers may be granted a period of relaxation of up to 5 years, but only upon submission of a certificate from the relevant authorities.
Whereas, candidates holding an L.L.M. degree can be allowed a three-year age relaxation.
Also, the upper age restriction for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, Transgender categories is relaxed by 5 years.
Further, candidates who have served in the armed services will be eligible for a 5-year period of relaxation, subject to the length of service in the armed forces between June 1, 2020, and June 1, 2021.
In no scenario, the total age relaxation on the abovementioned ground(s) can exceed five years.
Assistant Professor
As per the notification, the age limit and relaxation for the post of Assistant Professor is given below:
Candidates who completed the UGC/ CSIR/ JRF examination before 1989 are not required to pass the UGC NET qualification.
Candidates who passed the UGC-accredited States Eligibility Test (SET) for Assistant Professor before June 1, 2002, are excused from taking the NET and are allowed to apply for Assistant Professor positions throughout India.
Candidates who passed the SET after June 1, 2003, are only eligible to apply for Assistant Professor positions at universities and colleges in their respective states.
