Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or popularly known as GATE is one of India's known and reputed examinations which is conducted at an All-India test level . GATE exam is conducted by the institutions like GATE Committee, IISc, and seven other IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, and Department of Education. GATE exam leads to opening many opportunities for the candidates to grow their careers in different streams of subjects. Overall, as per 2023 it comprises 29 disciplines or subjects from which aspirants can give exams. Couple of years back in 2021, GATE Economics was started with introduction of two new papers: Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) and Environmental Science & Engineering (ES). From this year onwards, IIT Madras is taking admission through GATE score for its MSc Economics course.


GATE 2023 will be a Computer Based Test (CBT) to be conducted for 29 different SUBJECT papers.




GATE Economics is gaining more and more popularity like IIT JAM Economics not only among economics background student but also among non economics background students as well. GATE Economics Exam 2023 will offer students with an opportunity get admission into IIT Madras to pursue MSc Economics.



GATE Economics started in 2021 with IIT Bombay conducting the first GATE Economics. In 2021, IIT Bombay was the organizing institution and GATE Economics Exam was conducted for the first time in that year.

Whereas in 2022 IIT Kharagpur was the organizing institution.


Now, the upcoming IIT 2023 exam will be organized by IIT Kanpur .

GATE Economics 2023 Important Dates

Opening of Online Application - 30th August - 14 October, 2022 (Late fee after 7th October)

Download Admit Card - 3rd January, 2023

Exam Date - 4th. 5th, 11th &12th February, 2023

Result - 16 March, 2023

Online Application for Admission - 11 April - 25 April, 2023


GATE Economics 2023 Exam Date

GATE 2023 Economics will be held on 4th. 5th, 11th & 12th February 2023


GATE Economics 2023 Application Portal

GATE Economics 2023 Paper Type

Completely Objective type, with three types of questions:

(i) Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ),

(ii) Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and

(iii) Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.


GATE Economics Marking

In all sections, questions not attempted will result in zero mark.


In Section - A (MCQ), wrong answer will result in negative marks. For each wrong answer to 1-mark questions, 1/3 mark will be deducted and similarly for each wrong answer to 2-mark questions, 2/3 mark will be deducted.


In Section - B (MSQ), there are no negative and no partial marking provisions.


There is no negative marking in Section - C (NAT) as well.
