Centre for Development Studies or popularly known as CDS is a premier institution based in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. CDS was established as an autonomous social science research institute on 19 October 1970. It was under the leadership and vision of Shri C. Achutha Menon, the then Chief Minister of Kerala. CDS is supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Government of Kerala, and the Indian Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog.



The Centre is ranked first in terms of publications among the ICSSR institutes in the country and is internationally known for its research in development economics. CDS has been running two regular programmes, MA in Applied Economics, and Doctoral Programme in Economics. The degrees for both these programmes are offered by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

CDS MA Applied Economics Admission Process

To apply for CDS MA Applied Economics, here is the admission process:

  • The candidates must have appeared in the Common University Entrance Test – CUET (PG)-2024 conducted by NTA for the Test Paper Code COQP10 and satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned below.

  • Candidates, shortlisted on the basis of CUET score, will be called for interview.

  • The selection to the MA Programme will be on the basis of CUET score and interview.



CDS MA Applied Economics Eligibility

  • Bachelor’s degree in ANY discipline with at least 50 percent of marks.

  • The candidate must successfully complete at least one Mathematics/Statistics/Quantitative paper, either at the Plus-Two or undergraduate level.

  • Final Year Students may also apply.


CDS MA Applied Economics Course Fee

  • The tuition fee for the MA Programme is ₹ 12,000 (₹ 3,000 for students belonging to SC/ST/PWD category) per semester.

  • There is also one-time JNU Registration/Enrolment fee of ₹ 10,115 and miscellaneous charges of ₹ 500.


CDS MA Applied Economics Scholarship

  • Students with an annual family income of less than 2 lakh and who secures a grade point average of A (-) or more in all semesters would be offered (i) Semester fee waiver, (ii) Free hostel accommodation and (iii). Free Basic Cafeteria meals.

  • However the semester fee for the first semester cannot be waved off. This fee waiver facility is available from second semester onwards and to avail this, eligible students have to apply in each semester.

  • There are also two prestigious cash prizes to be won for those securing the highest marks in the quantitative subjects and the overall course, known respectively as the M.G Kanbur Prize and the Joan Robinson Prize.


CDS MA Applied Economics Hostel Facility

Hostel facility will be given based on availability on a shared basis. There are hostels for men and women on the campus.
